Therefore, the education system has also been affected due to the tense condition. The political turmoil created in the state and the military activities have possessed a great threat to the learning process. But there have been steps to improve the education system and proper implication of initiatives of the central government schemes.
The state records an overall literacy rate of 67.16% according to the census of 2011 which is lower than the average of the entire country. The state of Jammu and Kashmir has not reflected any great picture of the education system. Although there has been an increase in the number of schools and colleges in the state in recent years. The quality of education also seems to be likely increased as the state government is trying hard to work in the direction of the development of the education system.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir has twelve major universities including the national universities for management, engineering, fashion designing, etc. Despite having a limited number of universities, the institutions have positioned themselves in the top hundred universities of India according to the NIRF ranking 2020. The other universities hold historical value and are acknowledged as one of the important learning centers.
Institutes that have gained national importance are namely the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) in Jammu, NIT (National Institute of Technology) in Srinagar, NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) in Srinagar, IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Jammu, IIM (Indian Institute of Management) in Jammu.
The two-state universities - the University of Kashmir and the University of Jammu are ranked at 48 and 52 respectively according to NIRF top 100 colleges in India.
NIT is popular among students both in India and abroad for engineering and management. The other leading colleges for engineering in the state are - Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra, Islamic University of Science and Technology in Avantipora, and Government College of Engineering and Technology in Jammu.
The leading medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir include the names like Sher - I - Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, GMC (Government Medical College) in Srinagar, GMC Jammu, GMC Baramulla, GMC Anantnag, and Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences. Jammu and Kashmir have also developed an AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Vijaypur which has brought positive changes by combining both infrastructure and quality learning.
Ashoka law college, Dogra law College, Calliope School of Legal Studies, Jammu law College, Kashmir law, K.C. Law College College, and Sapora Law College are some of the popular institutions which offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in legal studies.
The other courses offered by the state are specialization in architecture, dental sciences, hospitality and service, hotel management, mass communication, etc. The state also provides vocational courses for the underprivileged ones who can opt for employment after completing the course.
The Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Jammu, (AMTE in Srinagar, Institute of Engineering and Technology and Research in Jammu, Institute of technicians and Engineers in Kashmir, Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Rehmat - e - Alam college of Education and Government polytechnic colleges provide diploma and professional courses.
The school of architecture and Landscaping College of engineering is famous for its Bachelor in Architecture. Apart from IIM, Graphic era Institute of technology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, and H N B Garhwal University find their name in the leading colleges for management.
Kalamkari vocation Oriented Women's Polytechnic is popular for Fashion Technology among the natives. The state also offers courses in agriculture in veterinary sciences to enable people to introduce innovation and technology in their techniques. The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir offers such courses.
Jammu and Kashmir have also gained much attention for providing research centers in Ayurveda, horticulture, integrative medicine as it helps the students to carry research work and proceed in the growth and development of the particular fields. The research institutes are Jammu Institute of Ayurveda and Research, Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture in Srinagar, State Forest Research Institute, and Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine.
