The University Of Madras was formed in the year 1840 January, but its petition was done in the year 1839 itself. Mr George Norton was the first president of the University when this was formed. In the year 1857, September, the university was established under the act of Legislative Council of India, which was after the systematic education policy was passed by the government of India. Many people consider this university as the Mother University of all the other Universities in South India. This University has six others campuses in Chetpet, Maduravoyal, Taramani, Guindy, Marina and Chepauk.
This UNOM ha 87 departments and 230 different courses are offered in these departments. From under graduation to research work, there are many different courses. It has almost 150 affiliated colleges and 53 research institutes. It also has many scholarship programs for the students that need them or eligible for them, almost 28 programs.
