With the intention of improving access to legal education across the entire north-eastern region, Jnanadabhiram Barooah Law College (also known as J.B. Law College or JBLC) was founded in 1969.
One of the most influential people in the college's founding was its first principal, the late Golap Chandra Chowdhury (1969–1972).
The college was named after first principal of Assam's first law school, the Govt Earle Law College, who passed away on March 19, 1969. The naming ceremony took place on March 19, 1969, in the existence of the five members of the governing body.
The College currently provides a three-year Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) / Bachelor of Laws (Hons.), a five-year Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Laws (Hons. ), and a two-year Master of Laws (LL.M) program
The College is dedicated to maintaining its high profile and academic standing in the area of legal training.
