It was in the state capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, that the now defunct Bhopal University first opened its doors to students in 1970 as Barkatullah University.

In 1975 as the Department of Distance Courses, this university is known now by its present name. The National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) gave the school a B in 2015.

The university is particularly pleased with its extensive offering of graduate and postgraduate-level programs. The university offers classes in a wide variety of disciplines, but its master's and postgraduate diploma programs are its bread and butter.

In 1988, it was renamed Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya to honour the life and legacy of Bhopal native and independence fighter Professor Barkatullah.
