Dr NTR University of Health Sciences was established in 1986, named by the name Dr Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, the previous Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. NTRUHS has been recognized by several authorized bodies like the Medical Council of India (MCI), University Grants Commission (UGC), Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH), Central Council of India Medicine (CCIM) and Indian Nursing Council (INC).

There is a total of 298 affiliated colleges that comes under NTRUHS that provides inclusive education of various UG, PG, Super Specialty and Diploma course. Apart from degree courses, it offers PhD level or Doctorate programmes. Students either pursue full-time or part-time doctorate courses. All of these courses impart training, research and education in the field of Ancient and Allopathic Indian Systems of Medicine, Nursing & Paramedical, Physiotherapy and Modern Medicine & Allied Health Sciences like Dentistry.

Admission to the institute is based on states or national levels entrance exams such as NEET for super speciality course, NEET-UG for MBBS & BDS, and NEET PG for MD, MS and MDs.
